FDL
this year will take place in Lille.
Ten centuries of history leave their mark ! Classified as an "Art
City" since 1974, Lille kept many civil and religious buildings
from its great past : the Citadel, erected by Vauban one of the
better examples of the military architecture of the 17th century
; La Vieille Bourse (the old stock exchange building), a remmant
of the Spanish occupation, which asserts so well the combination
of the two cultures, the French one and the Flemish one; The Grand
Place, a highlight of the Lille and its Goddess, a symbol of the
resistance against the Austrians in 1792 ; the Porte de Paris
(Paris gate), the Monnaie Street, where coins were made. Look
up to see the sculpted angels, guardians of walls that are sometimes
made of pink bricks and white stones, and elaborate shop signs,
that craftsmen liked in the old age. The Palais Rihour, old living
place of the Dukes of Burgundy, was destroyed by a fire in 1916.
After cities such as Athens, Florence, Madrid, Berlin and Avignon,
Lille was chosen to be " European
Culture Capital ".
